MEMIR/Operator Training Simulators for the Energy Sector
From Major Emergency Management to FPSO, Semi-Sub and High Voltage Training
What Is an Operator Training Simulator?
An operator training simulator (OTS) is a software-based system that replicates the control systems, processes and emergency scenarios of a real offshore or industrial asset. Operators can practise routine procedures and respond to equipment failures, blackouts and emergency situations in a realistic environment without risk to personnel, production or the asset itself. Learn more about the benefits of simulator based training.
Pisys operator training simulators are used by oil and gas operators, drilling contractors, training centres and energy companies worldwide. Each simulator replicates the specific systems of a vessel or facility from FPSO production and stability through to jackup jacking operations, semi-submersible ballast control and high voltage switching, giving trainees the most relevant and transferable experience possible.
Cloud-based or on-site delivery
Pisys simulators run on a wide range of hardware, from a single laptop to a fully immersive multi-screen control room. A cloud-based option is also available, allowing crews to complete refresher training or prepare for specific campaigns without travelling. All simulator models are available through the Pisys online platform on a flexible access basis. MEMIR and OPITO emergency response training
Pisys simulators support OPITO MEM and MEMIR emergency response training across a range of vessel and facility types, including FPSO, semi-submersible, jackup and double-derrick configurations. Instructors can inject faults, trigger emergency scenarios and record sessions for structured debrief and performance assessment.
The world's most widely used Major Emergency/Incident Response and Control Room training simulator.

Train without Travelling
Students and instructors interact with voice, simulated radio, PA, phone and email. The control systems will operate to replicate the function of the physical systems and instructors can create scenarios which can be paused and replayed or stored for future use.
The cloud system can also be used for Incident and emergency response management training simply by loading a new model.

Configurability
One of the strengths of the Pisys Training Simulator is that it is easy to change it, add to it, and improve it.
Available Simulator Models
Each simulator is available off-the-shelf or configured to match your specific asset.
Double Derrick Semi-Submersible
A modern deepwater double-derrick semi-submersible simulator designed for advanced MEMIR training. It combines dynamic positioning, dual well centre drilling, integrated marine and drilling power management, fire and gas systems and helideck monitoring in a single realistic training environment. The dual-activity environment creates a significantly higher cognitive demand on the OIM than a conventional rig, making vessel-specific training essential for organisations preparing personnel for deepwater drilling emergencies.
Semi-Submersible Vessel Simulation
A highly realistic simulator of offshore drilling and production semi-submersibles, used for stability and station-keeping training and assessment. Trainees respond to a wide range of emergency scenarios including collisions, loss of watertight integrity, blackouts, equipment failure, shift of cargo, severe weather and mooring failure, developing the command skills needed to manage complex offshore emergencies.
Jack-Up Training
An incredibly realistic simulator for familiarisation with marine operations relating to self-elevating platforms. Covers elevated operations, stability and marine management, foundations, rig moving practice in both wet and dry transport conditions, punch through scenarios and accident response giving trainees hands-on experience of the full operational lifecycle of a jackup rig.
FPSO Training
A detailed simulator that accurately emulates the key operational processes of a generic FPSO, including production, fire and gas systems and other critical vessel operations. Available as an off-the-shelf model widely used to train crews worldwide, or configured as a bespoke model to match your specific asset. Pisys worked with CNR International to build a process simulation model of the Baobab FPSO off the Ivory Coast, helping to train operators to manage a large and complex deep-water subsea development.
High Voltage Switching Training Simulator
A software-only high voltage simulation environment for training centres delivering HV courses. Instructors can demonstrate and assess HV switching, fault conditions and safety procedures without energised equipment — reducing cost and risk while ensuring compliance with applicable standards. Supports both operational and management level HV training, aligning with the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements for HV system design, switching procedures, isolation, earthing and permit to work.

"Pisys simulators are a huge part of our emergency response training and we believe them to be best-in-class. They allow us to replicate critical situations in all offshore and onshore environments with an amazing level of detail. Pisys’ commitment to quality and service over the last 15 years has been amazing and their cloud-based platform is a great addition to their product range as it will increase the flexibility of course delivery, particularly for our international clients."

Delivery Options
If required, we can supply the system installed on a hydraulically activated platform for added realism (also available on FPSO and Jack-up systems). We can also create a bespoke model of your specific asset, replicating all relevant aspects of the control room to provide whatever level of fidelity is required.
The control room is large enough to accommodate a full CRO team and brings an added element of realism to scenarios such as semi-submersible ballast control, rig move etc. The platform’s movement can also be set up to reflect any desired sea state, bringing an extra dimension into play.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of major emergency management training?
The purpose of major emergency management training is to prepare personnel to respond safely and effectively to major incidents such as fires, explosions, gas releases, equipment failures, and structural events, using realistic simulation-based scenarios.
What standards does this training support?
It supports OPITO standards such as MEMIR (7228), OIM Controlling Emergencies (7025), Control Room Operator Emergency Response (9004), Onshore Control Room Operator (7031), and muster/coordination competence standards. NOGEPA standards are also supported
Who should attend simulator-based emergency training?
Courses are generally provided for Control Room Operators, Incident Commanders/OIMs, Emergency Response Teams, Muster Coordinators, and operations or maintenance personnel involved in emergency management.
What types of emergencies can be simulated?
The system can replicate any incident which may occur in the desired environment - for example: Fire, gas release, explosion, equipment failure, process upsets, loss of power, environmental hazards, structural failure, and multi-event escalating incidents.
What are the main learning outcomes?
The learning outcomes include: Improved command, control and communications, better situational awareness, stronger decision-making under pressure, enhanced teamwork, and better understanding of emergency procedures.
How realistic is the simulation environment?
Modern simulators replicate control room systems, alarms, instrumentation, process behaviour, fire and gas systems, and environmental conditions to create an immersive, realistic experience.
The simulator allows : Greater safety, the ability to practise high-risk scenarios, repeatability, remote access, flexible scenario creation, reduced costs, and alignment with recognised competence standards.
Yes. Scenarios can match actual plant layouts, equipment, control systems, and emergency procedures relevant to the facility.
Trainees are assessed through observation of decision-making, communication, procedural compliance, use of safety systems, and achievement of defined training objectives, often aligned with OPITO competence frameworks.
Simulator training allows realistic testing of ERP procedures, communication flows, escalation steps, muster and evacuation processes, and coordination between control room, field teams, and onshore support.
Simulator training complements live drills. Simulators allow safe practice of high-risk or rare events, while live drills validate physical actions, equipment use, and real-world coordination.

Cyber Essentials Plus Certified
Cyber Essentials Plus helps us guard our organisation against cyber attacks. This is important because vulnerability to basic attacks can mark us out as a target for more in-depth unwanted attention from cyber criminals and others. Certification gives us and our customers peace of mind that our defences will protect against the vast majority of common cyber attacks simply because these attacks are exploiting targets which do not have the Cyber Essentials Plus technical controls in place.
ISO 27001 Certified
We strive to ensure the integrity, confidentiality and availability of all systems and data used by Pisys in their delivery of hosted applications to their worldwide client base, protecting these systems and data from all threats, internal and external, deliberate and accidental. To do this, we have deployed an information security management system (‘ISMS’) compliant with the ISO/IEC 27001 information security standard to meet our information security policy. The ISMS will allow compliance with customer contracts, and relevant laws of the UK and any company within which Pisys Ltd operates.
